JKL Facts - Clothing Terminology

At JKL Clothing we work with clothing everyday so are familiar with the terms used to describe the many different types of clothing styles, designs, fabrics etc. This terminology is often used in the product descriptions on our website and so, can be useful to understand when you are selecting the types and style of garment for your order.

We have therefore decided to write a few blogs on the subject of clothing terminology in the hope that it will clarify to our customers what the varying terms mean.

Yoke – This is a piece of clothing material that is sewn into a garment in order to support other looser material on the garment. In shirts, such as polo shirts it is sewn around the back of the neck and shoulder. In trousers and skirts it is sewn around the waist thus supporting the hanging fabric in the legs or the rest of the skirt.

Placket – This means “to lay on” and in clothing refers to allowing the garment to be put on and taken off more easily. In shirts for example the placket can be found on the front where the buttons are and also on the cuff at the end of the sleeve. They are almost always made of more than one layer of fabric.

The above image is a Fruit of the Loom polo shirt showing a front buttoned placket.
Taped Neckline – A taped neckline is a piece of fabric covering the stitching between the garment body and the collar. It strengthens the garment but also and more importantly makes the garment more comfortable to wear.

In our next blog we will look at different types of fabrics and what the descriptions actually mean. In the mean time why not do a spot of shopping and check out our casual leisurewear clothing and see if you can spot our terminology.

Established in America in 1851 Fruit of the Loom is truly a global company with outlets in over 20 countries encompassing 6 continents. Fruit of the loom is something of a branded clothing superpower within our industry.

So here are some Fruit of the Loom numbers;

  • 32,500 are the number of people employed worldwide by Fruit of the Loom
  • 97 is the number of current styles available
  • 51 is the number of colours that these styles are available in.
  • 1 manufacturing plant in Morocco
  • 21 dye jets, 64 spinning frames and 220 knitting machines are to be found in the Morocco plant
  • 2.2 million garments are manufactured here every week
  • 50 million garments are held in stock at any one time

These numbers give you some idea of the size of this made for garment decoration heavyweight.

Fruit of the Loom use only the finest US cotton in manufacturing all their clothing and they are currently the only brand to use the Belcoro yarn which is spun on autocard spinning machines providing a cleaner more stable print area with fewer loose fibres.

It may also interest you to know that Fruit currently support 3 main charities (Childline, Cancer Research and the Newlife foundation for disabled children) they are also certified to Oeko-Tex standard 100-08-5295 which certifies that their garments contain no substances harmful to people or the environment.

Five Reasons Why You Should Invest In Printed Workwear

If you are familiar with us at JKL then you should know that we’re a dab hand at customising clothing whether by embroidery or printing. This means we know why you should always invest in printed workwear, we’re not business boffins but we know a thing or two about printed workwear.

1. Get your branding noticed
Make sure your customers know your brand, enforcing your branding on your workwear is a good way to get noticed.

2. Creativity is key
Hands up if you’ve gotten a catchy slogan or song in your head. Not just us then? Creativity is key, and your workwear can be your advertisement space. Think of something catchy or memorable, it might just get you noticed.

3. Make it personal
We’re all human and when we’re playing the customer role it’s nice to know who we’re dealing with. Getting printed workwear which displays the name of the staff member who is helping you is perfect for building relationships.

4. Looks professional
Every little thing helps when it comes to the presentation of your business. Having quality printed workwear may seem like a minor detail but combined with your business branding it makes a big impact.

5. It’s custom
Worst thing about workwear? It’s all the same. Having printed workwear means that you have custom made workwear to represent your business and also satisfy your staff!

Workplace Clothing Etiquette – Why It’s Best Not To Cut Corners

Ok – Hands up we all like to cut the odd corner when it comes to daily chores but there are a few things that you think you can get away with, but in reality you really, really shouldn’t.

So, to start off the New Year here are a few of our favourite pictures of people cutting corners when it comes to workplace clothing.

1. The improvised face mask
Can’t be bothered to buy a face mask for work? Or maybe you left yours at home, well here is something you really shouldn’t try.

2. Are flip-flops the new safety boot?
Finding the price of safety boots expensive? Why bother when you can turn your flip-flops into a safety shoe. They’ll definitely protect you when you drop something large on your feet, well on second thoughts maybe not.

3. Something out of reach? Try this genius method
Fair enough we can’t call them out on their work wear but we can point out the obvious, a plank and machinery does not mix. Try a ladder next time fellas.

4. Sunglasses & cardboard – The new safety mask hitting shops soon
Where do we start? Sunglasses should not be an alternative for protective eyewear and as for the cardboard face mask, we’re not too sure that will protect you from sparks they tend to set paper on fire.

At JKL we don’t cut corners but we do cut our prices, so if you’re looking for quality work wear that’s purse friendly then take a look at what we have to offer.

Winter Workwear still the order of the day

Workwear orders received by JKL Clothing continue to be dominated by cold weather workwear garments. The UK has just had the wettest April since records began and this has certainly transferred to the styles of workwear clothing that we have dispatched to our customers and received enquiry after enquiry for.

Top of the list has been garments from the Portwest Wet Weather Range such as the Portwest Sealtex Waterproof Jacket.

Available in 5 colour options Black, Grey, Navy, Olive and Royal and 7 sizes from Small to 4 Extra Large this is the perfect wet weather jacket. This usually proves popular throughout the winter months as those requiring workwear jackets look to the weather forecast and make a buying decision on which garment will get them through a typical UK rainy winter day.

We have compared the most popular workwear clothing products sold during the last 2 weeks of April in 2011 with those sold for the same period in 2012. The difference is quite startling. Last year our top selling workwear items included workwear shorts such as the Portwest Workwear Texo Contrast Shorts.

Available in 3 colour options, Black, Charcoal and Navy and 5 size options Small to 2 Extra Large we have only processed a limited number of orders for these and other Workwear Shorts from our range.

Now that we have entered the month of May the weather shows no sign of changing to a more drier climate with many areas of the UK still under water and further flood warnings in place.

Rest assured though when the great British summer does eventually arrive JKL Clothing have a range of workwear garments ideally suited to a warmer drier season.
